Review17772-grey-divider-no-background-hiDeath Sworn

by Leah Cypess

Genre: Young Adult High Fantasy

Series: Death Sworn #1

Source: Won from Books: The Cheapest Vacation You Can Buy. (Thank you!)

Book Summary:

When Ileni lost her magic, she lost everything: her place in society, her purpose in life, and the man she had expected to spend her life with. So when the Elders sent her to be magic tutor to a secret sect of assassins, she went willingly, even though the last two tutors had died under mysterious circumstances.

But beneath the assassins’ caves, Ileni will discover a new place and a new purpose… and a new and dangerous love. She will struggle to keep her lost magic a secret while teaching it to her deadly students, and to find out what happened to the two tutors who preceded her. But what she discovers will change not only her future, but the future of her people, the assassins… and possibly the entire world.

book thoughts

YES to YA High Fantasy! I loved the setting of the Assassin’s Caves. It was cut off from the wider world, so the world-building happened slowly but surely and kept me curious. The author didn’t have a lot to work with for rich setting descriptions, but she still managed to draw me into the world, and the language was always vibrant. I absolutely loved the magic system! Utterly unique and enthralling, but still authentically high fantasy.

“She was only seventeen, but already she felt as ancient as the stones around her.”

First of all, Illeni is about the cutest name ever. I really felt for her character. She fell so far. The author portrayed her almost fatalistic view of her life excellently. I know I relate, and that many young adults will. The assassins were a bit more difficult. They were essentially brainwashed. It was hard to understand them (I’m just as much a pacifist as Illeni starts out), so I found it very difficult to relate. Still, I felt for Sorin, who never asked to be an assassin, but had no other opportunity to even survive.

I’m not really a fan of the fairly modern “Oh, I can’t admit I love you because that might lead to labels, or feelings, or even a relationship! Gasp.” type of ” romance”. Love should be the greatest experience we can have – don’t treat it like a burden or something to  just fool around with. However, with these characters I must admit it made sense. They were both expecting to die soon, or at least had been conditioned to think their lives were not their own. Sorin was sweet and charmingly inexperienced, which I always appreciate. Illeni was a bit cold, but she mostly warmed up. Mostly. Her view of the relationship is half the reason I only gave four stars. She says she loves him, then says she can get over it. Sounds like she doesn’t really love him, then, doesn’t it? Or doesn’t understand the concept. Urgh. So frustrating.

The other reason I took off a star is the violence. Maybe I shouldn’t have read a book about assassins if I didn’t want violence, but it was more the attitude toward it. I get that the assassins are brainwashed into violence, that they’re fighting an evil empire, etc., but what really bothered me was how quick Illeni was  to dismiss her morals and decide killing was “easy”. It just didn’t sit right with me. I did like her last decision, which seemed more in line with her principles, and I have hope that she’ll really take a stand against the violence and conditioning in the next book, and that the romance will actually be a bit more, you know, romantic. Overall, I enjoyed the story and recommend it.

Fragile Reign by Stacey O'Neale

Details about the cover, from author Stacey O’Neale:

In case you’re curious about the cover, the model represents Marcus. The background represents the woodland court and the caves at the bottom are where the members of the royal family live. I chose caves because the woodland court protects the forests of the world. I didn’t think they would choose to cut down trees to make a castle, so the massive caves worked out nicely. If you zoom in, you can see where the doors and windows are cut out. The inside is very lavish. If you read FRAGILE REIGN, you’ll learn all about it.

FRAGILE REIGN (Mortal Enchantment #2) by Stacey O’Neale | November 18, 2014

It’s been a week since all hell broke loose…

Rumors of King Taron’s weakened powers have left the air court vulnerable. Kalin is desperate to awaken her akasha powers, except she doesn’t know how. Tension within the court is at an all-time high. Pressure is mounting for her to ascend to the throne, but a halfling has never ruled over any court. To solidify her position, the council has advised her to marry Sebastian—a high ranking air elemental she’s never met and her betrothed.

Will Kalin sacrifice her relationship with Rowan to strengthen her court?

Rowan and Marcus return to a fire court in turmoil. Liana’s death has fueled the fire elementals’ distrust against the air and woodland courts. The unbalanced elements have set off natural disasters all over the mortal world. Rowan takes the throne to restore balance, promising to unite the fire court. But not all elementals are happy with his leadership. Many are secretly loyal to Valac, which means Rowan needs to find allies for his cause.

Can Rowan unify the court of fire before the elements destroy the world?

“It’s time to concede, fair Katarina,” Zebulon remarks in a bored tone. “Though I don’t particularly mind breaking your spirit or your mind, your body I need intact.” ~Zebulon

Honorable knights do not threaten and kill innocents—we protect them. ~Katarina

“I owe him everything then for saving you so that we could meet.” ~Ethan

“You look like the Ethan I met in Verdane with that smirk plastered on your face,” I say with a loud sigh. “That Ethan was very annoying.” ~Katarina

“You think to scare me with a fluffy white dog?” ~Lilith

“Is your life so precious that it’s better to live through deceit than die through valor? Are we nothing but pawns to be used as you see fit?” ~Caleb

“You have no idea how badly I want to just whisk you up into my arms and run away,” he whispers before pulling away. “Sometimes I really despise duty.” ~Ethan

“That’s not really true,” Bronwyn scoffs. “I can think of several ways, one of which includes a full-scale assault.” She tosses her long black hair, and then stares out the window at the darkening evening, the twilight giving her pale skin an ethereal glow. “Or we could just feed whoever it is to Loki.” ~Bronwyn

excerpt

Excerpt from Chapter One ~ Pirates

The pirates seem endless as they swarm over the schooner, taking out the less experienced merchant sailors with ease. Any that challenge me fall to my blade within moments. They may have vast numbers, but their sword skills are lacking. Most try to avoid fighting me. Either they don’t see me as a threat or they don’t wish to harm what they view as a valuable captive.

Several pirates disregard me and storm past to surround Captain Harris, who is fighting at my side. The fool tries to lead the group away in what appears to be a last-ditch effort to protect me.

My heart wrenches when he’s hit on the back of his head with a saber. He collapses to the deck unmoving. I race to his side, cutting down the three pirates surrounding him. Ignoring the battle raging all around me, I fall to my knees beside him. He stares up at me, sorrow marring his handsome features. I brush the hair from his forehead with my fingertips, watching the blood gush from the wound on his head. It’s a fatal injury. He’ll bleed out within moments.

“I’m so sorry, Katarina,” he murmurs as I gaze into his stricken brown eyes. “I wish… I…”

“Shh, don’t speak,” I say, grasping his hand while his body shakes.

“S-stay strong,” Harris whispers. “Don’t let… him catch you… save Tellain.”

Harris knew? I gaze at him in silent question and he nods. He knew I was on the run from Zebulon the whole time. This man I thought a scoundrel could have made a fortune turning me in, and now he’s dying in an attempt to protect me instead.

“How?” I ask around the lump in my throat.

“W-wanted pos… ter.”

Coughs wrack his body. With a grunt of pain, he raises his hand and brushes a light caress across my cheek with his fingers, leaving a warm smear of blood behind. His eyes glaze over in death, and I close them with my fingertips, saying a quick prayer to War God Ramil.

I rise and return to the battle raging around me, shaking with an overwhelming combination of fright and fury. Captain Harris was the only skilled swordsman on this ship, with him gone… I steel my back along with my resolve. I’m the only thing standing between the pirates and my family now—they need me, the people of Tellain need me. This is no time for sorrow, regret, or dread.

When I bury my fear, rage-fueled adrenaline consumes me. Several stunned brigands fall under the wild, almost berserk swings of my sword. Intense anger gives me strength. I cut a swath through the pirates, leaving injured and dead men lying in my wake.

My sword pierces through the stomach of a small pirate standing near the cabin door. His muddy brown eyes meet mine, shock etched across his young face. My heart sinks. He’s a boy, not more than twelve years old. We stare at each other, my sword still lodged in his torso. I watch the light in his eyes dim until they glaze over and roll backward. The young pirate writhes a bit on my sword before sliding off and collapsing to the ground, a tangle of lifeless limbs. I somehow manage to continue on, though my fury has faded to grief. The only thing that keeps me swinging my sword is years of intense training, duty so deeply ingrained it’s become a part of me.

Grabby Paws: Jackaby by William Ritter + The Witch’s Boy by Kelly Barnhill

Grabby Paws

“Grabby Paws” is my version of the Waiting on Wednesday meme hosted by Breaking The Spine that highlights upcoming releases that I can’t wait to get my paws on. 🙂

Today I have grabby paws for…

“Miss Rook, I am not an occultist,” Jackaby said. “I have a gift that allows me to see truth where others see the illusion–and there are many illusions. All the world’s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the house with a view behind the curtain.”

Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary–including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain it’s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police–with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane–deny.

Doctor Who meets Sherlock in William Ritter’s debut novel, which features a detective of the paranormal as seen through the eyes of his adventurous and intelligent assistant in a tale brimming with cheeky humor and a dose of the macabre.

Why I have grabby paws…

Well, considering Doctor Who is one of my favorite things ever and I love Sherlock too, and the Victorian Era is my favorite historical time period, I need this now. Lucky for me, Algonquin contacted me and asked if I was interested in reviewing this title (and the one below) and I said YES! My first official review for a publisher! SO excited!

“A lightning bolt erupted from the cloud and aimed directly at Ned’s heart. He couldn’t cry out. He couldn’t even move. He could just feel the magic sink into his skin and spread itself over every inch of him, bubbling and slithering and cutting deep, until he didn’t know where the magic stopped and he began.”

When Ned and his identical twin brother tumble from their raft into a raging, bewitched river, only Ned survives. Villagers are convinced the wrong boy lived. Sure enough, Ned grows up weak and slow, and stays as much as possible within the safe boundaries of his family’s cottage and yard. But when a Bandit King comes to steal the magic that Ned’s mother, a witch, is meant to protect, it’s Ned who safeguards the magic and summons the strength to protect his family and community.

In the meantime, in another kingdom across the forest that borders Ned’s village lives Áine, the resourceful and pragmatic daughter of the Bandit King. She is haunted by her mother’s last words to her: “The wrong boy will save your life and you will save his.” But when Áine and Ned’s paths cross, can they trust each other long enough to make their way through the treacherous woods and stop the war about to boil over?

With a deft hand, acclaimed author Kelly Barnhill takes classic fairy tale elements–speaking stones, a friendly wolf, and a spoiled young king–and weaves them into a richly detailed narrative that explores good and evil, love and hate, magic, and the power of friendship.

Why I have Grabby Paws…

Algonquin also asked me to review this title, and I think it sound adorable. I love that excerpt! A fairy tale with real fairy tale language. Gimme!

Reapers: The Metaphor

In the Reaper’s Rite series, a teenage girl is faced with battling Reapers. The scary creatures loom in shadowed corners, waiting to strike, so they can feed on frightened souls. One might assume that the battles taking place in my book are a metaphor for fighting death. But that assumption isn’t quite correct. The theme behind MY SISTER’S REAPER and MY TETHERED SOUL is actually the empowerment of good over evil, and secondly, the strength of females to take control of their lives.

In a world where so much bad happens, where we feel helpless to fix the evils of the world, we have to remember to use our magic—or in reality that inner strength and will within us—to stand up for what we believe in and do what we have to do to make things right. I took this mindset to heart when writing my protagonist. Sure, there are times when she feels weak and helpless, like she’s trying her best but it’s still an uphill battle. But that strength and will within her and, in the book, her magic, help her to persevere. And I hope that underlying message comes across to my readers: always believe in your magic!

“Did you know I was different when we first met?”
“Fishing for complements now?”
“No, wondering if you noticed something different about me, smart ass. Ingrid and Maliina did.” I faced forward and sighed. “Ingrid said witches can recognize each other.”
Andris shuddered. “Don’t talk to me about witches.”
“What is it with you guys and witches? Torin reacted the same way.” I noticed we were headed east toward my place. “You’re really not going to buy me a macchiato?”
“Got that right, but since I’m such a nice guy, I’ll go back to town and pick up your favorite. Extra large.”
I frowned. “Sounds like you don’t want to be seen with me.”
“No, I don’t. You’ll mess with my game. I’m single and on the prowl. Besides, you have papers for your father to sign and you want to catch him lucid.”
He was right, dang it. “How did you know about the forms?”
“Vulcan hearing.”
I rolled my eyes. He was a serious sci-fi fan. Movies. Books. TV series. He ate it up. Of course, he’d never admit it to anyone but those closest to him. He pulled into our cul-de-sac. My eyes went to Torin’s place. The house was closed up.
“Where did you say Torin went?”
“I didn’t.” Andris pulled up in front of my house. “He’ll be back before you know it, so go hug his pillow or something.” He ducked when I aimed my backpack at his head.

Though the Greek and Roman crewmembers of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen—all of them—and they’re stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood—the blood of Olympus—in order to wake.

The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it “might” be able to stop a war between the two camps.

The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea’s army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over.

Why I have grabby paws…

I think that’s the Australian edition cover, but I like it better than the US cover so I picked it to use for this post. Because why not? Weird, because all through the series I’ve preferred the US covers. But I like how this one has all of the demigods on the cover. Anyway, I wouldn’t care even if the cover was hideous, I NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. I don’t want the series to end (NEVER!), but I need to know what happens! I need more Percy and Nico and Leo. All the demigods really. I’m going to miss them so much. *cries*

A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don’t need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week.

So begins Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic–and sarcastic asides–to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who’s who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. “If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that.”

Dramatic full-color illustrations throughout by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco make this volume–a must for home, library, and classroom shelves–as stunning as it is entertaining.

Why I have Grabby Paws…

Well of course I always want more Percy Jackson, and I love the classic Greek myths. I like that this gives a way for us to see some of the myths we haven’t seen yet (Riordan has managed to squeeze in TONS of course, but there are just so many). I’ve been curious since The Lighting Thief about which version of the Greek creation myth the series follows. Plus, the illustrations look lovely. THIS cover I’m all about. I’ve already got this one preordered.

After spending the summer away from each other, Titus and Iolanthe (still disguised as Archer Fairfax) are eager to return to Eton College to resume their training to fight the Bane. Although no longer bound to Titus by a blood oath, Iolanthe is more committed than ever to fulfilling her destiny—especially with the agents of Atlantis quickly closing in. Soon after arriving at school, though, Titus makes a shocking discovery, one that makes him question everything he previously believed about their mission. Faced with this devastating realization, Iolanthe is forced to come to terms with her new role, while Titus must choose between following his mother’s prophecies—and forging a divergent path to an unknowable future.

Why I have grabby paws…

Yay YA Fantasy! And look at that cover! I love Iolanthe and Titus’ names. Also, it releases on my mom’s birthday, which is cool. 🙂
