“Miss Rook, I am not an occultist,” Jackaby said. “I have a gift that allows me to see truth where others see the illusion–and there are many illusions. All the world’s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the house with a view behind the curtain.”

Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary–including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain it’s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police–with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane–deny.

Doctor Who meets Sherlock in William Ritter’s debut novel, which features a detective of the paranormal as seen through the eyes of his adventurous and intelligent assistant in a tale brimming with cheeky humor and a dose of the macabre.

Why I have grabby paws…

Well, considering Doctor Who is one of my favorite things ever and I love Sherlock too, and the Victorian Era is my favorite historical time period, I need this now. Lucky for me, Algonquin contacted me and asked if I was interested in reviewing this title (and the one below) and I said YES! My first official review for a publisher! SO excited!

“A lightning bolt erupted from the cloud and aimed directly at Ned’s heart. He couldn’t cry out. He couldn’t even move. He could just feel the magic sink into his skin and spread itself over every inch of him, bubbling and slithering and cutting deep, until he didn’t know where the magic stopped and he began.”

When Ned and his identical twin brother tumble from their raft into a raging, bewitched river, only Ned survives. Villagers are convinced the wrong boy lived. Sure enough, Ned grows up weak and slow, and stays as much as possible within the safe boundaries of his family’s cottage and yard. But when a Bandit King comes to steal the magic that Ned’s mother, a witch, is meant to protect, it’s Ned who safeguards the magic and summons the strength to protect his family and community.

In the meantime, in another kingdom across the forest that borders Ned’s village lives Áine, the resourceful and pragmatic daughter of the Bandit King. She is haunted by her mother’s last words to her: “The wrong boy will save your life and you will save his.” But when Áine and Ned’s paths cross, can they trust each other long enough to make their way through the treacherous woods and stop the war about to boil over?

With a deft hand, acclaimed author Kelly Barnhill takes classic fairy tale elements–speaking stones, a friendly wolf, and a spoiled young king–and weaves them into a richly detailed narrative that explores good and evil, love and hate, magic, and the power of friendship.

Why I have Grabby Paws…

Algonquin also asked me to review this title, and I think it sound adorable. I love that excerpt! A fairy tale with real fairy tale language. Gimme!

In a world of shadows, anything is possible. Except escaping your fate.

Ever since she was a child, Ivy has been gripped by visions of strange realms just beyond her own. But when her sister goes missing, Ivy discovers the truth is far worse—her hallucinations are real, and her sister is trapped in a parallel realm. And the one person who believes her is the dangerously attractive guy who’s bound by an ancient legacy to betray her.

Adrian might have turned his back on those who raised him, but that doesn’t mean he can change his fate…no matter how strong a pull he feels toward Ivy. Together they search for the powerful relic that can save her sister, but Adrian knows what Ivy doesn’t: that every step brings Ivy closer to the truth about her own destiny, and a war that could doom the world. Sooner or later, it will be Ivy on one side and Adrian on the other. And nothing but ashes in between…

Why I have grabby paws…

I love the name and the cover! I’ve never read a Jeaniene Frost book before (I know!), but this makes me think it’ll be like White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout, which I surprisingly loved, even though it’s more NA than YA. I’m really intrigued by the mythology here.

Every touch has its price.

Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…

Why I have Grabby Paws…

I loved the first one! And I’m all about sequels. Second books tend to be my favorites, because they open up the world more and completely immerses the reader in it. I’m eager to see where the story goes from here and see what all the characters are up too.

Though the Greek and Roman crewmembers of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen—all of them—and they’re stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood—the blood of Olympus—in order to wake.

The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it “might” be able to stop a war between the two camps.

The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea’s army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over.

Why I have grabby paws…

I think that’s the Australian edition cover, but I like it better than the US cover so I picked it to use for this post. Because why not? Weird, because all through the series I’ve preferred the US covers. But I like how this one has all of the demigods on the cover. Anyway, I wouldn’t care even if the cover was hideous, I NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. I don’t want the series to end (NEVER!), but I need to know what happens! I need more Percy and Nico and Leo. All the demigods really. I’m going to miss them so much. *cries*

A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don’t need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week.

So begins Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic–and sarcastic asides–to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who’s who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. “If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that.”

Dramatic full-color illustrations throughout by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco make this volume–a must for home, library, and classroom shelves–as stunning as it is entertaining.

Why I have Grabby Paws…

Well of course I always want more Percy Jackson, and I love the classic Greek myths. I like that this gives a way for us to see some of the myths we haven’t seen yet (Riordan has managed to squeeze in TONS of course, but there are just so many). I’ve been curious since The Lighting Thief about which version of the Greek creation myth the series follows. Plus, the illustrations look lovely. THIS cover I’m all about. I’ve already got this one preordered.

The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.

Why I have grabby paws…

Even though I haven’t started this series yet, I already know I’ll love it. So I want the third book to release already do I can go on a series-binge. The Russian mythology aspect is especially tantalizing. I love exploring new mythologies, and I’m not as familiar with Russian myth as I’d like to be. Plus the author seems like a really cool person.

John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars meets Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park in this beautifully written, incredibly honest, and emotionally poignant novel. Cammie McGovern’s insightful young adult debut is a heartfelt and heartbreaking story about how we can all feel lost until we find someone who loves us because of our faults, not in spite of them.

Born with cerebral palsy, Amy can’t walk without a walker, talk without a voice box, or even fully control her facial expressions. Plagued by obsessive-compulsive disorder, Matthew is consumed with repeated thoughts, neurotic rituals, and crippling fear. Both in desperate need of someone to help them reach out to the world, Amy and Matthew are more alike than either ever realized.

When Amy decides to hire student aides to help her in her senior year at Coral Hills High School, these two teens are thrust into each other’s lives. As they begin to spend time with each other, what started as a blossoming friendship eventually grows into something neither expected.

Why I have grabby paws…

I don’t talk about this much online, since it’s nice to have an escape, but not only do I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, I also have a spinal condition similar to cerebral palsy (I had a spinal cord injury ten years ago, so now I’m partially paralyzed below the waist). Thankfully I don’t need a voice-box, since my injury is below the waist, but even with a walker there’s no way I’d be strong enough to walk the halls of a high school. So I feel like this book was kind of written for me.

I’m a bit nervous to share all this. I don’t want anyone to think of me differently. But you, my lovely readers, would never do that, would you? You’re way too awesome for that. 🙂

In the conclusion to the trilogy that Publishers Weekly called “a roaring—and addictive—gothic world,” Eleanor Fitt must control her growing power, face her feelings for Daniel, and confront the evil necromancer Marcus…all before it’s too late.

Susan Dennard will leave readers breathless and forever changed in the concluding pages of this riveting ride.

Why I have grabby paws…

Well first of all, it’s set in the Victorian Era and deals with magic! Yay! I’m not a huge zombie fan, but necromancy? Definitely. I generally like to wait until I have all three books in a trilogy before I read them but I’m getting ancy! Also, I was lucky enough to be accepted for the official tour! Look!

Strange & Ever After

Pretty! So anyway, I’m on the tour but alas! I do not have a print ARC. (I can’t do eARCS because I have over-sensitive eyes and no e-reader) I’m trying really hard to get a copy, so if anyone would be willing to trade with me I’d love you forever! My trade list is here.

Vance Ehecatl was raised with every luxury he could imagine in a beautiful greenhouse within the powerful empire of Midnight. Vampires are the only guardians Vance has ever known since he was abandoned by his shapeshifter family as a baby quetzal, and he is grateful to them for generously providing for all of his needs. When an act of violence forces Vance from his sheltered home, he is startled to meet Malachi Obsidian, a fellow shapeshifter with conflicting ideas about Midnight and its leader, Mistress Jeshickah.

Malachi claims Vance is a bloodwitch, who Jeshickah and her trainers, Jaguar and Taro, are trying to control. Vance doesn’t know anything about the rare and destructive magic Malachi says he possesses, and he can’t believe Jeshickah would use it to hurt others. But when his friends begin falling ill, Vance starts to realize his perfect world may not be as flawless as it seems. Now Vance must decide who to trust—the vampires he’s always relied upon, or the shapeshifters who despise them.

Why I have grabby paws…

I’ve been a fan of Amelia Atwater-Rhodes since her first novel, In The Forests of the Night, which she published when she was only 14. I was 11 when it came out, and in addition to loving the story I was inspired by her, since I also wanted to be a writer. I love her Kiesha’ra series best, but I’m fascinated by the entire world she’s created and can’t wait to dive back into it!
