Heiress. Debutant. Murderer. A new generation of heroines has arrived.

Edinburgh, Scotland, 1844

Lady Aileana Kameron, the only daughter of the Marquess of Douglas, was destined for a life carefully planned around Edinburgh’s social events – right up until a faery killed her mother.

Now it’s the 1844 winter season and Aileana slaughters faeries in secret, in between the endless round of parties, tea and balls. Armed with modified percussion pistols and explosives, she sheds her aristocratic facade every night to go hunting. She’s determined to track down the faery who murdered her mother, and to destroy any who prey on humans in the city’s many dark alleyways.

But the balance between high society and her private war is a delicate one, and as the fae infiltrate the ballroom and Aileana’s father returns home, she has decisions to make. How much is she willing to lose – and just how far will Aileana go for revenge?

Why I have grabby paws…

Historical Fiction! Scotland! Faeries! This looks amazing.

And now for an excerpt!

ONE:

I was dreaming—some disjointed, nonsensical nightmare—when I felt a heavy pressure on my chest; like someone was sitting on me. I worked to breathe as it became a little harder to push air in and out of my lungs. The feelings of anxiety and doom returned ten-fold and my eyes flew open. Of course all I saw was darkness. An immense black hole where there used to be light.

With a rush of adrenaline I raised my hands to push at whatever was on my chest. I twisted my hips, trying to turn to my side. Something gripped my wrists and forced my hands to the ground beside my head. I felt the weight shift down and legs like a wrestler’s wrap around my knees, pinning me in place with the strength of a bear. A scream froze in my throat. No sound could escape through the icicles of my vocal cords.

A mouth pressed against my ear. The breath unnaturally hot as an unfamiliar man’s voice whispered, “Shhh, Paige. Everything’s fine. You want this. You want me. You’ll never want anything more than what I’m going to give you right now. Just relax and enjoy.” His voice flowed like melted chocolate—smooth, sweet, and addicting.

The most terrifying thing about the words he breathed into my ear was—I believed them. The fear that wrapped around my heart like the tentacles of an octopus just slithered away—replaced by desire as his lips closed over mine, hot and moist. I kissed him back with great intensity. My mind became fuzzy and thoughts were slow to form.

TWO:

He was big. He towered over me by at least a foot. A piece of greasy hair fell over his eyes as he lunged for me at the same time as I grabbed for my summoning necklace—that wasn’t there. I’d left it on the bathroom counter. I wasn’t prepared as he tackled me to the ground. I landed hard, with the grease ball on top of me. My breath came whooshing out and the pressure in my chest incapacitated me. I couldn’t breathe. Panic overtook me for a moment before I realized the breath had just been knocked out of me and my respirations would return shortly. The Big Greasy Giant laying atop me didn’t help the breathing problem.

As I lay there in the dirt, a rock jutting into my back below my backpack, I worked hard to inhale. I turned my head toward Halli. I wasn’t sure what had happened to her, I just saw two of the men crouched over her limp body, blood flowing from a large cut on her forehead. I struggled to push my assailant off me. He held me down while another of the goons grabbed my arms. Grease Ball put his face right up to mine and said, “Stay put little lady . . . or don’t. ‘S always more fun if ya don’t. Don’t even think about usin’ yer voodoo on me. One little spark and yer friend over there gets her throat slit.”

THREE:

At first, the spell didn’t seem to affect the Ghoul much. But then, it stopped and stood, head shaking, a confused look in its flame-red eyes. A look of alarm passed over the hideous face next and the syringe dropped to the floor as the Ghoul’s astonished gaze turned to me. Eyes narrowed, it took a shuffling step toward me, gray skin beaded with sweat and red circles appearing on sallow cheeks.

I smiled wider as my magic surged. The powerful spell was too much for the monster to take. The Ghoul collapsed into convulsions as the heat rose and fried its pathetic brain. I turned the heat up another notch just to make sure.

The staff member that had been surely heading to her death and likely gruesome take-over of her body ran to the writhing Ghoul she thought of as George. She knelt beside him. “Jason, come here! George is having a seizure!”

I made sure my smile was gone before I turned to face the crowd gathered around Natalie.

Publication date: April 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult
Synopsis:

Devin Alexander grew up as the only day human in a world surrounded by night humans who drank blood, sometimes his blood. He spent his life training towards one goal: the protection of one of those blood drinkers, Arianna. But what is he supposed to do when the blue-eyed girl of the legends doesn’t need him anymore? What does his life mean then? How is a guy supposed to move on when the girl he has pined over for a decade chooses someone else?

Before he can even start to figure out his new life without Arianna, Devin has to deal with another problem. He needs to take care of some unfinished business with a night human he has known for less than a month, but with whom he is magically bound.

Vanessa McKinny has promised that she knows a way to undo the spell she placed on Devin to save his life. Devin would do anything to break the bond to be free of her, even if it means traveling to the sidhe village, a place inhabited by a race of night humans that has not had a day human visitor in more than a hundred years. If he doesn’t plan to get stuck, he must work with Nessa to find a way to break the bond. Only then can Devin have time to get back to finding his new goal in life, unless he discovers that his path lies with the sidhe.

And now for an excerpt!

“What’s wrong?” she asked. She looked over his shoulder and quickly around the room, but didn’t see anything.

“We need to dance our way out of here,” Devin replied quietly, while still spinning them in circles. “Just follow my lead.”

Nessa wanted to ask more, but Devin dipped her down suddenly with one hand. Pulling her back up, his fist pressed against her back, now holding an arrow he grabbed from an assassination attempt. No one saw the invisible arrow, but Devin still held onto it. After a few more quick spins that didn’t allow Nessa to ask more questions, yet brought them five feet closer to the exit, Devin caught a second arrow from a different assassin. The first assassin was still waiting. Even the assassins didn’t see their own arrows. As they were within ten feet of leaving, Nessa finally protested.

“Devin, what is going on?” she asked, a bit winded from dancing.

‘Not now. I’m trying to save your life,’ Devin answered silently. Nessa’s eyes went big. She obviously hadn’t considered the danger to her life. ‘Now duck,’ he ordered.

Nessa instantly bent down and pretended to adjust her dresses hem. Devin held out his empty hand to help her stand back up. She smiled and stood, though there was still hesitation in her eyes. She couldn’t see the arrows in his hand. Devin smiled back, and she relaxed a little. Nessa slipped her hands back to his shoulders, and Devin took the lead again, pulling her toward the exit on the opposite side of the room from their table.

‘Dinner, dance, and then done?’ Devin asked, reiterating that they were done. He didn’t expect any kind of protest, but he had to be sure that they fulfilled the role they were supposed to play.

Grabby Paws: Chantress Alchemy by Amy Butler Greenfield & The Lovely and the Lost by Page Morgan

Grabby Paws

“Grabby Paws” is my version of the Waiting on Wednesday meme hosted by Breaking The Spine that highlights upcoming releases that I can’t wait to get my paws on. 🙂

Today I have grabby paws for…

add-to-goodreads-button3

Lucy races against time and magic in this sequel to the “richly and thoughtfully written” (Publishers Weekly) Chantress.

Lucy is the last Chantress, the only remaining girl who can sing magic into the world. Since she defeated the evil Lord Scargrave, England has changed—and not for the better. With crops failing and the people rebelling, Lucy is called urgently back to King Henry’s court. His Inner Council is convinced that making gold through alchemy will save England. But a critical element to the alchemical process has been stolen. Lucy is tasked with finding it with her magic… or else. And until she succeeds, the castle is on lockdown.

Court too has changed. Scargrave’s brutal Chantress-hunter has become King Henry’s closest advisor. Lucy’s beloved Nat has fallen out of favor and is shunned by his colleagues; their romance means trouble for both of them. Worst of all, something goes wrong with Lucy’s magic. The palace is a labyrinth, and there’s a monster at its heart — a monster who may have the power to defeat Lucy once and for all.

Amy Butler Greenfield returns to the beguiling world of Chantress for a suspenseful tale of courtly intrigue, music, and magic in Chantress Alchemy.

Why I have grabby paws…

I’m still desperate to read the first book, but obviously I want this one too! Alternate history, magic through singing, royal intrigue. What more could one want?

Releases May 6th

I also have grabby paws for…

Ingrid and Gabby survived the Underneath. They saved their brother, Grayson, from a future of dark servitude and exposed a plot to undermine the Alliance. But danger still lurks in the streets of Paris, and the Dispossessed, perched on the city’s bridges and rooftops, might not be able to save their human wards this time.

Why I have grabby paws…

As with Chantress Alchemy, I still haven’t obtained the first book in this series, but of course I want both of them! This series reminds me a bit of the Gemma Doyle series, which I love, since it is a gothic involving the Victorian Era and the supernatural. I haven’t read that much gargoyle mythology but I find it really intriguing, especially given the Paris setting.

Excerpt:

“Look,” I began, knotting my fingers together to try and hide the blood, “those lads I was with… I don’t want anything to do with them really.”
Faye bit her lip. “They’re bad kids,” she agreed, “I didn’t think you were like that.”
“I’m not,” I promised, once again resisting the urge to grab her arm and insist, “I just… I didn’t know they were bad before I started going around with them. I only met them yesterday.”
“Opinions can change quickly, can’t they?” she snapped, her mood shifting once more.
“Charming, that is,” I bit back, throwing myself away from her, against the bench, “Well you can keep your changing opinions to yourself, because I know which way my mind is set.” I felt all my emotions bubbling up to the surface, brimming like a wave ready to crash against the sand. I tried for a moment to hold them back, but it was no good, all the agitation and anger spilled over and I couldn’t stop myself from speaking again. “You want to know why I went with them? Because they’re hard lads, apart from Freddie, and there’s four of them laying on the persuasion. And frankly, I quite like my face and I didn’t fancy getting it smashed in so I’d look like a mosaic for my sixteenth birthday, all right?”
My voice had risen during the altercation and I found there were people looking at me as they passed us by on the bench. I imagined what a state I must have looked with dried blood on my face and only a vest on. I leaned away from the passers-by, upset to find that tears were once again escaping from Faye’s silent face. I felt awful instantly for exploding at her; I had no right to upset her after what I’d done.
“Would they really smash your face in?” she whispered.
“I reckon so,” I replied, gulping down a dry breath. I was grateful for the nosebleed in that moment; my face didn’t have enough blood left in it to glow crimson and show her how embarrassed I was.
“Are you mad at me?” Faye asked, her lips shaking like they had on the Ferris Wheel.
I let out a laugh, some of my tension going with it.
“What would I be mad at you for?” I replied.
She gave a little shrug. “For thinking you were a crook? For spying on you? For not telling you yesterday that I had powers of my own?”
“No,” I said simply, realising that it was the truth, “I shouted at you for no reason and ruined your handkerchief, so I’d say we’re about even. Besides, it won’t do to be mad at you like that if we’re going to be friends.”
She wiped her last tear away and gave me a more hopeful look.
“Can we be friends?” Faye asked, like she wasn’t even sure that it was possible.
“I think we have to be after all this palaver,” I said with a grin.
A wave of thoughtfulness washed over her features for a moment, but then she nodded.
“Right then,” she answered, “shall we go somewhere and get your face cleaned up?”
I waved a hand at her. “I’ll dunk my head in the sea. It’ll be fine.”
